Welcome to our latest series on the Demac Media blog! We cover the eCommerce industry in depth, but we’ve never turned the lense and shown a light on the amazing people here who contribute to the growth of our clients and the growth of the industry.
This series will put Demac Media employees in the spotlight. Each week we’ll be featuring an employee from one of our departments on the blog, and asking them questions so that you can learn more about who we are, what we believe in, and how we work.
Let’s cut straight to the chase – this week I interviewed the always jolly David Philip, Integrations Specialist here at Demac. I knew he’d have some great answers to my questions, because…well he’s just an interesting guy to talk to! Grab yourself a Diet Coke, and let’s get to know David.
Name: David Philip
Role: Integration Specialist
Department: Integration
Time served at Demac: 3 years (including Co-Op)

How did you find Demac or how did Demac find you?
I found Demac through some of my awesome friends that work here. I was a programming student at Sheridan looking for a co-op job and two of my friends told me to apply at Demac. I did, the experience was amazing, and Demac was kind enough to bring me on when I had completed my diploma.

What’s your work-day beverage of choice? What’s your Friday afternoon beverage of choice
Diet Coke (I know, horrible for you). I just never got into coffee all that much. OR beer and/or Champagne.
-
How would you explain your job/role to a 5 year old?
So I look at information, and the information wants to go somewhere else. I tell that information, well, you have to change what you’re wearing because where you are going, there is a dress code. So I help the information change to be better dressed, than I drive that information to where it needs to go. I make sure it gets in safely and write it down and keep that safe.
-
How do you explain what you do to your parents?
I help data from different ERPs/ORMs into a website, and vice versa. I communicate with various APIs to get the correct data with minimal effort, format it to be platform specific, and push that data to where it needs to go. (My dad is a bit of a programmer himself)
-
Demac is a flexible workplace….what hours of the day (or night!) do you prefer to work or get your best work done?
I prefer early starting hours, I get a lot done between 7-12. After that I find I can get a bit distracted. Its why I like to work at home, so I can just roll out and start. I do, occasionally get a lot done around 21:00 of a week night.
-
What did you study in school? Is it relevant to what you do now?
I first got my BA in History and then my BEd. After that didn’t exactly pan out I went back to school for computer programming. So the latter part of my education is directly relevant. That being said, my BEd has made me much better at communicating with clients and management than I might otherwise have been. So I feel that my BEd has helped me a lot as well.
-
What song are you loving at the moment to listen to while you work? (or which was the last song played on your spotify?)
I have three go to songs when I start something. Eliza Lee by The Dreadnoughts, Sing sing sing with a swing (Benny Goodman Version), and Northwest Passage by Stan Rogers
-
What meme/gif/video makes you laugh the most?
Fry from Futurama saying “Shut up and take my money”
-
What’s your favourite site to buy from? / Which eCommerce site do you think is amazing?
Amazon. It’s so… so easy to use
-
How do you balance work and life? / What do you like to do after you leave the office?
I like to see friends and practice my hobbies (piano, wood burning, some side programming). It’s hard to balance work and life but I try and make time and make the effort.
-
What are you interested in that most people haven’t heard of?
I have recently been very interested in the poetry of Po Chu-I. I am also pretty into old-timey ciphers, codes, and hidden communications (such as the pinhole technique or book codes, etc…)
-
What do you love about working at Demac?
The people, hands down. No contest. People here rule.
-
Do you live Demac’s values in your everyday life?
I try to. I play some music and try and bolster my creativity that way. I also do some wood burning.
-
What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to shopping online/in stores/etc.
Popups… so many popups
-
What have you done at Demac that you’re most proud of?
That really depends. Because in some ways what I am most proud of isn’t my best work, but it was the first time I had a really tough programming problem that wasn’t schoolwork and I solved it in a really simple and effective way. It wasn’t perfect but I am really proud of it.
But in general what I am most proud of is being good at my job and trying to learn new things all the time in it.
